I got to meet some pretty cool peeps at TCAF. Saturday night we went out for dinner with some of the Saturday Morning Webtoons gang and friends. It was a good way to wind down my first day tabling, even if our meal took forever to cook!

Later on at the pub I met a few more peeps and struck up some conversations, but I was tired and the few drinks i had pretty much killed the night. I did get to thank John Martz for his help in finding some good archival quality paper in Toronto.

Lunch on Sunday with Alex and Jason Bradshaw was good too. Some good conversation. You should check out Jason’s Boredom Pays, and Alex’s Lopopo’s Lost Sock.

There wasn’t much of a chance to take in the rest of the con, and when I did get the chance, I only had enough time to breeze through the upstairs rooms.

I’m already looking forward to next year!

TCAF Follow-Up, Part 2

Over the course of the TCAF weekend my prints got a lot of attention, I gave away almost all my buttons, handed out countless business cards, and met a few fans. I sold a total of twenty-four prints, which was truthfully only about a quarter of what I brought… but a lot more than I was expecting to move!

My top selling prints, tied for first place were Nightcrawler and my Boss Wraith.

I wasn’t so surprised about the ‘crawler print, but it was nice to see that the wraith (part of a personal project) was so popular. In all, the established character work only accounted for one third of my sales. Considering the 70/30 split, that’s pretty even - which tells me that the people who were buying my stuff were interested in the artwork more than the subject matter - which is pretty cool!

I could write a whole other post about all the people I met (like the talented Francis Manapul, and Jason Bradshaw), our crazy Mexican dinner, and all the great books I bought (there go all my earnings!)… maybe later.

TCAF Follow-Up, Part 1

It’s been over a month now since TCAF, and finally I have time to sit down and write a follow-up blog post! Heck, I still haven’t had time to get to reading all the cool books I bought. Anyways…

This was my first experience tabling at any convention, so I was glad to have Alex Serra and Jack Briglio at my table. Both are good friends with a lot more experience with cons than me.

This was a bit of an experiment for me, since my only insight to how my work is received comes from the net. So far, drawing established characters always gets more attention than my original work (this is not surprising). But I wanted to put it to the test…

I was only selling prints this year - figuring that I cold keep the price low and try to get as many people as possible to see my work. I brought 70% original work and only 30% work based on other people’s IP.

The key was that I looked at the whole thing as an expense. I wasn’t expecting to recoup any money, so if I sold even one print it would be a bonus.

The goal was to get people to see my work, remember my name, and maybe buy a print. To that effect I brought some promotional stuff. I had new business cards made that focused on driving people to my Tumblr and Twitter. I also brought 250 1” buttons that I planned on giving away.

Jack and I were also promoting Alphabetic Al, the free comic download we worked together on for Saturday Morning Webtoons. J Torres (of the SMW) was at the table next to us and had these nifty banners.

So that’s the setup… I’ll write more about the results tomorrow!

If this doesn’t perfectly capture their relationship, I...

If this doesn’t perfectly capture their relationship, I don’t know what does.

theumbrellaseller:

hemsworthss:

science bros.

There are no words to describe my feelings about this relationship. But I’m going to try.

First of all, their parallels. Both geniuses, top of their field. Both suffered an accident that physically changed them, forever, and not in a wholesome Spider-Man kind of way. Both try to do what they can to help others despite their own issues; Banner heals people, Tony works on developing clean energy. And both struggle, in their own way, with duality; Tony and Iron Man, Bruce and the Hulk. Two identities, one body. Only difference is Iron Man’s bad side is Tony.

I mentioned somewhere that Tony sees a bit of himself in Banner because they both have a monster inside them that they can’t control, a creature that springs fully formed from the id, the base impulses and the nasty stuff at the back of the mind. Bruce’s is a giant green rage monster. Tony’s trashed a party in Iron Man 2. Banner has a control over his that Tony hasn’t quite achieved yet; don’t think I didn’t notice Tony pouring himself a whiskey when confronting Loki. Tony is envious, fascinated, and most of all, impressed by Bruce’s control.

So he doesn’t walk on eggshells around Bruce like the others, because that’s not what Bruce needs. Tony sees Bruce’s restraint, sees the quiet, brilliant man making self-deprecating jokes in the corner of the room, sees the way people look at him like he’s going to snap any second, and thinks “nope”. Tony does what no-one else aboard that Helicarrier does. He trusts him. He makes jokes and jabs him and teases him and above all, treats him exactly how he would treat anyone else— he has a great regard for Bruce’s brilliance, and tells him so, but he doesn’t try to ignore the Hulk in the room. When he says “wow, you’ve really got a handle on this, haven’t you?” he’s not saying “gosh, it’s incredible you haven’t snapped yet and killed everyone on board” he’s saying “I know you have a handle on this, you wouldn’t be here if you didn’t, so I’m gonna poke you with this sharp object to prove it”. And you can see Bruce relax, and smile, and trust him back.

But then Tony goes even further, and invites Bruce to come to his R&D department. I’m pretty sure the two of them drive off together in Tony’s car at the end of the movie to do just that. And, okay, sure, Bruce is smart, but Tony’s tech is his baby. How many people get invitations to come and see his work? He invites Bruce because he recognises his brilliance, yes, but there’s another reason. He’s inviting Bruce to come down and work with him after this is over. He’s giving Bruce something to do next, a purpose, an alternative to disappearing into the ether to be alone with his monster. Tony knows from experience that being alone with your issues doesn’t end well, so for what’s only the third time in his life he extends the hand of friendship to a guy he’s known barely an hour.

And then, he tells Bruce to let the beast loose. Not just because they need him to fight, but because it will help him. If Bruce can take this thing that he sees as a curse and turn it into a gift, well, that’s going to lift him out of a very dark place. I’m not saying Tony knew about Bruce’s attempted suicide, but I think he had a suspicion that Bruce had been, in his words, “low”. So he encourages Bruce to take all that crap and pain and the Other Guy and use him to help people; after all, that’s what he did.

And it pays off. Nobody— nobody— thinks Bruce is going to turn up for that final battle. You can see the look on Natasha and Steve’s faces when Tony asks if Bruce turned up yet. They’ve counted Bruce out. Guy’s a mess, right? He’s too volatile. Doesn’t play well with others. He could never work as part of a team. No-one thinks he’ll come through when it matters. Except Tony. He has faith in him, and that faith is rewarded. It’s no wonder the Hulk is the one to catch Tony. Tony’s the one who helped let him out. He’s just returning the favor.

Hey readers,

I just uploaded the comic I’ve been working on with writer Jack Briglio! It’s available as a (free) PDF download on Saturday Morning Webtoons. It’s a seven page story that introduces Al - the boy with the power to do anything he can imagine… so long as it follows an alphabetical order! Enjoy!

A little sumthin-sumthin I drew for a friend at work....

A little sumthin-sumthin I drew for a friend at work. She’s trying to win a free pas to this year’s FITC (fitc.ca/women), and this’ll be the cover to her proposal.

Reconstructed from actual fossils!

Reconstructed from actual fossils!

Last post I introduced “The Bronze Statesman” as my...

Last post I introduced “The Bronze Statesman” as my superhero character in John Stater’s Mystery Men! play test campaign. Well, true to comic book form, He’s evolved into the slightly-more-powerful Bronze Bellman!

Having been reunited with his long-lost skellet bell, this statue of a 17th century colonial town crier is once again safeguarding the citizens under his protection!
